Can't a girl get a break?!

This is not really what I had in mind! Yes, you are seeing that picture correctly. Ryan has a broken arm. UGH! Literally, just when the ear infections, RSV, vomiting etc. stopped. He's been pretty much over the RSV for about a week now and we had almost a full week with no barf. Almost. This week concluded with barf episodes on Tues., Wed. and 2 on Thurs. complete with no naps and a very unhappy baby. I was so done! Then Friday was GREAT! Two good naps, no barf and a happy little dude. I should have known better than to hope for a weekend without a trip to the hospital or urgent care since that's what we've been doing for the last 5 weeks! OK- I need to give a little back story here:

Ryan thinks he can walk. Seriously, he's taken some steps by himself and is determined to walk sooner rather than later. He's "cruising" all over, but isn't super steady yet so we have to be right behind him at all times. That's all he wants to do all day everyday. It's crazy.

SO, Friday evening after his dinner we were letting him do his thing before getting in the bath. He lost his balance and fell before we could grab him. He landed kind of awkward, but hardly cried so we took him upstairs for his bath. As Spencer was undressing him he freaked (very unusual). I went up to see what the fuss was about, but soon he was fine and wanted to "walk" around the little ottoman. We let him. On his 2nd time around he lost his balance again. This time I caught him, but only by one arm at the elbow/forearm. He wailed, but only for 1/2 a second. We thought he was scared, gave him a hug and put him in the bath. Then when Spencer was getting him dresses he freaked out again. All this freaking out is very out of character. So we looked a little closer. He seemed to be favoring his right arm and wouldn't crawl on it so off to Urgent Care we went. Why does everything always happen at 6:30 on Friday night?!

The Dr. we saw was not great (I'm being nice). They took x-rays, but really couldn't give us any answers until the radiologist saw the x-rays. By now Ryan was totally using his arm, NOT acting hurt and not even crying when the Dr. examined him, which thoroughly confused the Dr. They sent us home and said they'd call with any findings on the x-ray. By 9:30 we were home and Ry was sound asleep in his bed. At 9:35 they called and said it was a fracture and that we had to come back right away. UGH- I hate waking up my tired baby. They put a splint on him and told us to see an Orthopedic Dr. next week...and yet the Dr. still didn't really think it was broken...it was very odd. Needless to say we felt very unsettled. SO, Sat. morning we took Ryan in to the BYU urgent care (it was closed Fri. night) for a second opinion. New x-rays and a competent Dr. but still the same news: Green-stick fracture of the upper Ulna. Sad. So we will go see yet another Dr. this week, get a hard cast and go from there.

Meanwhile, Ryan is still as active as ever and barely seems fazed at all. If this is any indication of our future with him...we are in trouble. I wish I could get stock in an Urgent Care facility.

Ryan checking out his new accessory.

Obviously this hasn't slowed him down one bit. He's still crawling and trying to walk every second. I swear the kid is Hercules. He is one tough little dude.

I feel your pain. Marielle has broken her arm twice. The first time she had the flu the same week and threw up all over her cast twice. It was sick. Stick with the splint and ace bandage if the dr will let you because it is so much easier to take off for a bath and you can wash the ace bandage when it starts to stink. Babies heal so fast, it'll be over before you know it!

My sister in law got questioned by CPS when she took her little girl in 4 days after she fell because she just didn't act like her arm was broken. Little stinkers. Good luck!

Good grief, lady! You do need a break - not literally though :). Need some kid time? I'm free this week if you think Ry is up for it!

oh my word. . . . at least he is happy and still moving!! Wow! When we were out in WC for your wedding and Ella broke her leg, they tried to tell me in the ER that the line in her leg was some artery. They splinted it and told me to re-check it when we got back home. When they x-rayed when we got home, I could have diagnosed the break, and I couldn't tell you one thing about x-rays. Our orthpedist said 30% of all ER diagnoses are wrong, because they see such a broad range of sickness/injury. Ella's break had moved over the few days between, but still!!!

Wow, I'm glad he is happy and it hasn't slowed him down!

So sorry about all the mishaps. The joys of being a mom, right?!

Oh, Katie, how awful. Poor little guy. I'm glad he hasn't let it slow him down though :). Hopefully after this you'll get a good break from barf and broken arms and anything else like unto those.
