The Merkley Farm

IMG_6401

Seriously, besides the beach, the Merkley’s farm is the most peaceful place on earth.  It’s actually called Edgewood Farm and was established in 1851.  The road it is on was actually used by the soldiers of the civil war!  It’s 240 acres of gorgeous rolling fields backed by a river that I am sure is beautiful in the spring and summer.  They only have 2 horses right now, Patrick and Dolly, but they used to have 7.  They let their neighbors grow corn in the most fertile fields, hay in a few others and cattle and horses graze the rest.  They have over 25 chickens so we had fresh eggs for breakfast everyday.  If you’ve never had a fresh farm egg you are missing out.  They don’t even compare to the ones we get in the store.  Seriously, SO good.

We stayed in their guest house that has the most amazing bathroom ever.  It was great to have our own space and still be able to visit and spend time with them.  Ryan took his best naps there.  I told Spencer I wasn’t leaving.  We had perfect weather and felt so refreshed after being in DC.

This is how we all felt while we were there.

Soooo nice and relaxed.

Ryan LOVED all the animals.  The horses and the dog were his favorite.  He’s such an outdoor kid.  I think winter in UT is hard on him too.  I’m trying to take him outside more, but it’s just so dang cold here.  Here’s Ryan “talking” to Winston, the dog.

When I lived in CT Sarah, (the Merkley’s daughter) taught me how to ride and we’d ride together sometimes.  My secret love of horses is totally because of Sarah.  I know my way around a barn pretty well because I always had to help her with chores before we could play.  Anyway, Spencer hasn’t had that much experience with horses so we made sure to have Carolyn, (Sarah’s mom) give him a lesson on Dolly.  As you can see, he didn’t have any fun. :)

When we left I was sad to leave the farm like I’m sad to leave Hawaii.  I loved it that much.  We are already planning the next trip out.  Thank you Perry and Carolyn for such great accommodations, food and most of all, company!  We love you and can’t wait to see you again soon.

I wanna go! We should plan a trip with you guys and Sarah and her fiancee and us. Wouldn't that be so fun?! Granted, you'll probably do that without us at some point since Sarah is your best friend, but we would love to go too!
